Chair Carved From a Single Old Stump

chair-carved-from-single-oak-stump-5Most wooden chairs are made from many trees and many pieces, but artist Alex Johnson created this one from just one piece of wood. As part of this art residency at the White House Farm in Suffolk, UK, the artist started with a single oak stump, then patiently carved away at it until the final curving form was revealed.

The chair, which is called Glemham I, took about six months to complete and puts just about any chair carved from a stump to shame. (There are a lot of those chairs, surprisingly). It also looks really comfortable.
